Jonathan Cohen will read from his new book of translations from the Spanish, TWO ELEGIES OF HOPE by PEDRO MIR (Spuyten Duyvil, 2019). The book is bilingual, and presents a pair of majestic long poems that Mir wrote to honor poets Pablo Neruda ("Hurricane Neruda") and Julia de Burgos ("To Julia with No Tears"). Cohen is a poet, translator, essayist, and scholar. In addition to Pedro Mir, he has translated Ernesto Cardenal, Enrique Lihn, Octavio Paz, and Roque Dalton, among others. He is the translator (with Donald D. Walsh) of Mir's Countersong to Walt Whitman and Other Poems.

Barbara Southard is a visual artist and writer living in Miller Place, New York. She’s worked as a printmaker, free-lance artist, factory worker, teacher, and currently serves as Poet Laureate of Suffolk County, New York.
