M. L. Liebler first came to New York City in 1971 as a teenager. He spent two weeks in the Village visiting The Fillmore, and he discovered Gil Scott Heron’s poetry on vinyl at Bleeker Bob’s. He finally returned as a published poet in 1990 to read everywhere from St. Mark’s to the Knitting Factory on Houston, The Nuyorican Café, The Right Bank in Brooklyn, The YMCA’s West Side Writer’s Voice and City College. Liebler is an internationally known and widely published Detroit poet, university professor, literary arts activist and arts organizer. He is the author of 15 books and chapbooks and has been St. Clair Shores (his hometown) first Poet Laureate since 2005. His newest anthology, Respect: Poets on Detroit Music edited by M. L. Liebler and Jim Daniels (Michigan State University Press 2020), just received the 2021 Library of Michigan Notable Book Award. Forthcoming is an album of poetry and music entitled The Moon a Box for Record Store Day (2021 by M. L. Liebler and Al Kooper.) “I first saw Faruq Z. Bey do poetry and music at The Orange Bear and The Bowery Poetry Club in early 2002.”
